Shut up, kid!
These are MY kind of people!
I’ve dealt with my own annoyingly clueless neighbors behind me the past 10+ years. (They’re known in our household as “the idiots behind us.”) They seem nice enough, but their inconsiderateness obliterates anything good about them.
One of my commiserating neighbors once said that these people seem to think they’re living in one of the sprawling estates up the street in Hope Ranch. (They have a sizeable house that probably fools them into thinking they have more space than they actually do… They’re a stone’s throw from my bedroom window.) They make noise like nobody’s business. The dad has a loud, booming voice and likes to operate one of his many power tools many times a week while speaking on his cell phone just on the other side of our common fence. The kids play and shout way too loudly on a regular basis. They seem to step far enough away from the front of their house so as not to disturb those within, butting right up against the back of our common fence so WE can hear everything.
It really sucks when I want to sit in our back patio area and quietly sip a beer or have a nice brunch, only to have a leaf blower start up, followed by an incessantly bouncing basketball and screeching kids… with mom communicating shouting at them from inside the house.
I’ve gone over to complain. I’ve yelled across the fence and out my window. I called the police on them once. (Mind you, they carry on for HOURS and HOURS, morning-noon-night.) Years ago, I printed out information about noise pollution and left it at their door.
Once-in-a-while-noise I could deal with. I also understand that a kid will sometimes belt out uncontrollably. (I fear I’ll come to understand that more and more as Sofie gets older.)
However, just plain-out inconsiderateness? No tolerance for. It’s not just about the noise in my and those poor Garden City villagers’ situations. It’s compounded by the lack of respect and consideration by the offending household. I blame the parents. They are unnecessarily loud and, as examples, teach their kids that they need neither be aware nor considerate of their surroundings.
I hate the idiots behind us and I bet I wouldn’t like the Poczateks either.
