Stuff from my in-box, 08 July 07

Miscellaneous things in my email today…

Interesting.  And, no doubt, this is just the stuff that managed to make headlines.  Now, I know China doesn’t just produce crap, and all crap isn’t necessarily made solely in China, but…

I was interested in anthropology and archaeology as a kid. Recognizing this, my dad gave me a cool kids’ book about the excavation of a lost world.  (I wish I could remember the title.)  Anyway, after reading it, I commented to my dad that future generations who excavate our society would probably determine that China was the superpower, as practically everything is labeled as being made there.

One of the many things that impresses me about Tim is that he takes his role as a voting-via-purchase-power consumer seriously and always checks the origin of manufacture on products.

Inspired by this, I made the New Year’s resolution a few years back of not buying products labeled “Made in China.”  (Unless it was supposed to be made in China, such as an Yi Xing pot.)  There were a LOT of things I would have bought, were it not for that label.  It was a very interesting and enlightening exercise.  I committed to the resolution really well that year.  While I am no longer as diligent about it, I do continue to look at the labels, and it does often affect my purchasing decision.

(While I don’t patronize them often, (admittedly because there aren’t any nearby,) I should probably list every 99¢ Only Store and its ilk under Guilty Pleasures.)

Couple of other random Made-in-China-isms:

Prof. Richard Appelbaum: One of my heroes and buddies with whom I work, Rich has been exploring China’s growing investment in nanotech, positioning itself toward becoming the world’s nanotech superpower.  (China spent more on R&D than Japan in 2006.)

Mardi Gras: Made in China: Tim saw this was airing on the Sundance Channel about a year ago and thoughtfully dvr’d it for me, knowing I’d be interested.  (I’ve since seen it continues to pop up now and again on Sundance.)  Engrossing.  Put my former bead-whore days into sobering perspective.  Watch it.

I totally wanna go!  Anyone?  Anyone?  (Kerri, when are you fleeing Lawn Guiland? )

I’ve not had stuff from here, but the rub comes highly recommended by Trevor.  I received confirmation that the Rudy’s Rub and Rudy’s Sauses (both kinds) I ordered are on the way.  This KC girl anxiously awaits their arrival.

  • Cori!

Cori’s in the midst of her first trip to Europe.  She felt in her soul the need to go years ago, but life had other plans for her (two beautiful children).  One day last winter, she carpe diemed (not sure I’ve ever seen that as a verb before) and got herself a ticket… a solo trip.  I’m beyond excited for her!  This message had her reporting from Leipzig, where some friends took her to an underground goth club.  (She wore turquoise and bright red. :) )

(Cori, did Eddie bust out his rave moves? :)  Pictures, please!)
