smile: unadulterated joy

August 29th, 2007

Sofie is a very smiley baby.  I feel privileged and proud to state that she appears to be a very happy and content little person.

Words cannot describe the warm and fuzzy feelings that surface when she looks at me and smiles.  Especially when she hasn’t seen me in a while.  Her whole face scrunches up in a smile…  In fact, her whole body scrunches up.  And knowing all of that joy is for ME.  She’s happy to see ME.  It’s an absolutely genuine and special gift from her.

So, the two of us went to Peet’s yesterday afternoon to get me some coffee.  She LOVES being out and about, and was fascinated by all of the people and sounds in the cafe.  She’d stare intently at someone for a while and then just break out in a smile.  On a couple of occassions, I saw that Sofie was being ignored by the object of her attention, or said object just simply would not return her smile and quickly look away.

I have been guilty of similar behavior in the past… in my life before Sofie.  A baby or kid would smile at me, but, if I didn’t feel like smiling, I wouldn’t.  Like, so what.  I didn’t ask the kid to smile at me anyway.  Just leave me alone already and stay out of my way.

I thought about this past behavior after leaving the cafe.

Now I know better.  A smile from a child - or especially a baby - is as close to expressions of pure happiness as one can get.  They have no agenda.  They are just delighted by the simplicity of one’s presence, and radiate this with pleasure through a smile.

So, go forth and appreciate, acknowledge, and reciprocate those smiles gifted to you by little ones.
