Tag, I’m it.

November 26th, 2007

Lovely Becky tagged me for a meme with the following instructions:

  • Link to your tagger and post these rules on your blog.
  • Share 5 facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
  • Tag 5 people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
  • Let them know they are tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Here it goes:

1. I used to shamefully watch soap operas. (Young & the Restless, Days of Our Lives)

I became hooked after meeting 19 year old Michael Damien (Danny Romalati) back in the early 80s one month before he premiered on Y&R. I was about 13 years old. (He was really only famous at the time thanks to overexposure in Tiger Beat.) I had gone to his concert at Worlds of Fun in KCMO. It was pouring rain to the point where they shut the park down. My friend and I held steadfast at the gate in front of his trailer hoping to get his autograph. Finally, the guard let us in, and Michael invited us into his trailer to hang out, eat, and watch Wonderful World of Disney with him. He also took a towel and dried my hair himself. After all of that, of COURSE I was going to get hooked!

I ran into him again 12 years later at a jazz club in San Francisco. (The boyfriend of one of my best friends was playing bass. He’s now the bassist for Tori Amos, having been so for nearly a decade now.) When I approached Michael and started to relate the story (while his girlfriend snarled my way), he totally took over, cheerfully recounting it himself and gave me a hug. Bless that man!

2. I have spent my lifetime biting and tearing my fingernails. About a year ago, my therapist conjectured it to be an OCD thing, considering the extremity to which I carry out my dastardly habit.

(Oddly, in high school when I took my med and physical exams for admission to the US Naval Academy, my nails were the only part of my exams that I flunked. Yes, they check ones nails.)

3. I can belch on command. I can even belch out in song.

4. I’ve learned how to sail, however, I don’t really know how to swim.

5. My palms sweat a lot. As a result, I’ve never done well with physical activities requiring a grip, like tennis, pull ups, etc.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I have always washed my hands a lot? In fact, when I first informed my mom of my OCD diagnosis a few years ago, she made the comment, “I wondered if there was something going on! Ever since you were really little, you’d wash your hands so much that I thought you were going to wash the skin right off of ‘em!” I had no idea I’d been doing this.

As for tagging folks, anyone who cares to play along is welcome. :)

Confession: I was tagged and never fulfilled the meme.
    Shame on me!
And bravo to you for completing the meme!
So, did you go to the U.S. Naval Academy?

Thanks for the pat on the back, Beth! And, honestly, on Day 25 of NaBlahBlahBlah, I quite welcomed having a meme to work with. :)

As for Annapolis, in 1985, I was selected to attend a summer seminar (approx. 300 entering high school seniors were selected from across the country — 100 of us female) which was used as a recruiting tool to give prospectives an introduction to life as a cadet. While I was accepted, I decided not to attend. I found it to be a fabulous opportunity for an amazing education, but the environment was just not for me.

BUT, I did meet my first love there. Glenn. He was from NY, and was everything this once precocious misfit of a girl from Kansas fantasized about. (I knew I wanted to move to NYC when I was 10 years old.) Our relationship lasted a good 7 years. Well, our relationship *together*. We continue to sporadically, tempestuously keep in touch.

Next May 6, I demand that you belch me a hardy “Happy Birthday”. No greater gift would be possible.
