my stalker

November 3rd, 2008

Facebook’s targeted ads spook me, seriously making me feel like I’m being followed. Well, technically, I guess I am being followed. Eighty percent of the time, they’re pretty right-on. (I particularly resent the plethora of ads for “40 year olds” that started coming my way one week after I turned 40 this year.)

One I received today:

facebook bacon ad

It troubles me that an ad like this exists. There really is a market for everything, eh? It especially concerns me that I am considered the target audience.

And they are 100% correct.

I heart bacon, as you - and Facebook - know. So it comes as no surprise that I clicked on this ad. (I typically do NOT click on them.) Upon doing so, I was taken to this diddit.com page.

Diddit.com bacon challenge

I never heard of diddit.com before, but the fact that someone there dreamt up a Bacon & Wine Tasting (from the list The Bacon Challenge, nonetheless)? I am most certainly compelled to explore further .

I SO don’t want to encourage my stalker. But throwing bacon my way? Like offering candy to a little kid.

UPDATE: a quick poking around at The Bacon Challenge list took me to this: Bacon Cheese Sticks.

Oh. My. Lard.

I wonder what red wine Ed H. would suggest cuz one will definitely need those flavonoid and resveratrol benefits after eating these delights.

Can’t see that link to the bacon Cheese sticks–you have to sign in to diddit and I’m not that energetic this Monday morning–but as for a bacon/cheese wine match, you have to go Rhone varietal, don’t you? A Cote Rotie or heavy duty US Syrah, say one from Denner in Paso Robles?

Hmm… I hadn’t registered but was allowed access to the Bacon Cheese Sticks. I must have some cosmic special access to all things bacon. *shrug*

The page reads (btw, I especially like the “oink-oink” tag):

    hey regina -

edh here. your blog post popped up on google alerts because we try to track what the community is saying about diddit.com. thanx for your post and glad you found it relevant and interesting.

To answer your question the big rich red zinfandels won hands down in bacon tastings. In particular Turley zins were the biggest hit given their high alcohol level and super extracted fruit. As a fellow bacon lover you might also be interested in knowing that Hobbs Applewood smoked bacon won best bacon of the evening.

    cya on diddit, edh.

    just gimme the bacon.

Thanks for stopping by, edh! You have totally inspired me.

It’s hard to imagine Turley NOT going well with anything. I’d love to read tasting notes, if you posted them anywhere. I’ve not tried Hobbs Applewood; hard to imagine topping Niman Ranch. Only one way to find out.

Did your tasting include the bacon cheese sticks? I’m inclined to think George’s wine suggestions would nicely complement the cheese factor.

Not that I doubt you. Anyone who drinks Turley certainly knows a thing or two about yummy things.

You know, I almost suggested Turley myself. One of the happiest days in my life is when I got on the Turley mailing list–it felt as if I won the Lotto.
